Oleh / oleh chadash (new immigrant)

Also known as: Репатриант (оле / олим) · עולה / עולים

Jewish immigrant who has come to Israel for permanent residence under the Law of Return.

Oleh (m), olah (f), olim (pl) — terms describing people who have immigrated to Israel under the Law of Return of 1950. The law grants the right to Israeli citizenship to anyone with one Jewish grandparent (or who has converted to Judaism). The Russian-speaking olim community is a large group that immigrated primarily in the 1990s from former Soviet countries, and in recent years from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Many notarial procedures — apostille, powers of attorney, translations — are tied specifically to olim needs: documents for Russian banks, inheritance in the country of origin, notarised translations of birth and marriage certificates.
